Indian Railways
The initial railway in India started in 1853 from Bombay (present day Mumbai) to Thane, a distance of 21 miles (33 km). It was built to a gauge of 5ft 6in (1675mm), which was adopted as standard for the majority of main line railways in the Indian subcontinent.
The Indian railway network today is extensive, with narrow gauge lines supplementing the standard gauge in the more remote areas. A line from Amritsar to the Pakistani border at Atari links with the Paksistani network via Lahore. The Indian network connects with the Bangladeshi network at Bangaon, northeast of Kolkata, but there are no through passenger trains. A metre gauge line to the border town Jaynagar permits interchange with the Janakpur Railway of Nepal.
